A lifting cup (or charge cup) is a cylindrical or conical cardboard cup, which is used to hold the lifting charge to project a shell into the air. The lifting cup with the lifting charge is attached under shell where the time fuse or spolette is - unless the shell is a top-fused shell. The lifting cup is usually left behind in the mortar after the lifting charge is ignited and the shell is launched into the air.
